Yuzuru Hanyu Biography

A Japanese figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu is mostly known as the first Japanese man to win an Olympic gold medal. He won his first medal in figure skating at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

He was also the winner of the second Olympic gold in the 2018 winter games. The game was held in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Yuzuru Hanyu means “a tight bowstring”, symbolizing trust, strength, and straightness. He was born on 7th December 1994 in Sendai, Japan. He was raised together with his older sister, Saya, in Japan.

His father is a vice-principal in the Izumi Ward of a Junior High School in Sendai city, Miyagi prefecture, and his mother is a housemaker. He holds Japanese citizenship.

Hanyu was always interested in sports. At the age of 4, he started skating after he got inspiration from the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah.

He saw the match between the Russian skaters Aleksey Yagudin and Yevgeny Plushchenko which spiked his interest in skating. With his hard work and passion, Yuzuru mastered the most difficult moves, the Biellmann spin, and the quadruple jump.

In 2009, he won the Tokyo Junior Grand Prix final with a gold medal, and also following year, he again won a gold medal in the 2010 junior world championships.

Professional Career

Hanyu has an amazing track record. He continued to have remarkable success as he won a silver medal in the Continent championship in both 2011 and 2013. Further, in the 2012 World Championships, he was a bronze winner.

During the 2012- 13 season, he was a winner in the Sochi Grand Prix final with a silver medal. Later in the 2013- 14 season, Hanyu won the gold medal in Fukuoka, Japan Grand Prix Final.

With his amazing success, Hanyu also set a new world record with a score of 101.45 points at the Sochi Games, performing a routine that included a spectacular quadruple toe-loop jump and a virtually perfect triple axle. He was the first-ever skater in a short program to exceed 100 points. Although there were some stumbled in his subsequent free skate, he was the winner with a total score of 280.09 against Canada’s rival Patrick Chan.

Hanyu also made a record of becoming the youngest winner of the Olympic men’s skating title since 1948. He also took part in a new event where he finished fifth. In 2014, he became the first male skater to win world championships and Olympic titles winner in the same year since Yagudin in 2002.

After 3 years, he won his second gold medal in the 2017 World Championships. In addition, He won a second consecutive gold medal at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, against Javier Fernandez López (bronze medalist). He made the record of being the first man to win back-to-back Olympic figure skating gold since Dick Button.
