Willie K was an American musician, vocalist, singer/songwriter, and record producer who was born William Awihilima Kahaiali’i. Hawaiian, rock, blues, and opera were among the genres of music he performed. At the age of eight, he began performing with his father, Hawaiian jazz guitarist Manu Kahaiali’i. He shared the stage with Prince, Mick Fleetwood, Stephen Tyler, Willie Nelson, and Carlos Santana, among others.
He received 19 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards during his long musical career. According to Hawaii News Now, he received several albums of the year awards, Male Vocalist of the Year in 1992 and 2010, and Most Promising Singer. He’s also been nominated for a Grammy Award.

Death of Willie K
After a two-year battle with lung cancer, Willie K died on May 18, 2020, at the age of 59. “We are sad to announce that Willie K passed away on Monday night (May 18th) in his home in Wailuku surrounded by his ohana,” his family said in an Instagram post on his profile.
“He was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in January 2018.” He battled for more than two years while still performing. He was admitted to the hospital in mid-February for pneumonia, which caused problems with his lung cancer.
“He was in good spirits, doing well, and looking forward to playing once more. He then took a turn for the worse and lost the fight.”
“Willie remained optimistic as he bravely battled cancer for two years, always preferring to play and entertain fans even though ill,” Mayor Michael Victorino said in a statement. He was generous with his time and creativity, which spanned a wide range of musical genres from Hawaiian to rock, blues, and opera. Willie’s family, friends, and countless fans and admirers have our prayers and deepest condolences. Our society has suffered a tremendous loss. He will be sorely missed, but he will never be forgotten.”

With his voice, he was able to link blues and Hawaiian music, as well as local and popular music and culture. Willie K paved the way for other local artists to flourish by redefining music in Hawai‘i. We will remember his vivacious spirit, his zeal, and the music he shared with Hawai‘i and the rest of the world for a long time. His music will live on, even though he will be deeply missed.”
