Willie began his professional career at Grambling State College after playing high school football there. At the time, he was endorsed by the Houston Oilers Group of the American Football League (AFL), but he was released during the instructional course. He was then hired by the Denver Mustangs in 1979, where he filled in as a starter and was named ALL-AFL the following season.

Willie began his NFL career in 1967 as a cornerback for the Oakland Looters, after previously playing for the Horses. During his career, he was a three-time Super Bowl champion, a four-time Master Bowl champion, a three-time First-group AFL champion, and a three-time Second-group All-AFL champion.

He was a Cautious Backs mentor for the Oakland Looters from 1970 to 1988. He also coached at Long Beach State University and Jordan High School. From 1995 to 2019, he was the Oakland Thieves’ Head of Staff Advancement.
