Kenneth Ray

Kenneth Ray passed away at the University of Cincinnati Hospital. Ray’s mother, Lesley, and father, Jimmy, are both still alive and well.

Kenneth Ray, 32, was fatally stabbed on Monday at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility in Birmingham, Alabama.

According to reports received by EJI, Mr. Ray was stabbed multiple times while alone in a Donaldson dorm room without the presence of a security guard.

He died before police officers could respond to the hostel’s other men’s screams for help. Mr. Ray was murdered while Department of Justice officers were inspecting the building.

The Justice Department filed a lawsuit against the state of Alabama and the Alabama Department of Corrections in December 2020 for failing to protect inmates from violence.

Why Did Kenneth Ray Go to Jail?

A man from York was arrested in 2021 and charged with criminal attempt—criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and restricted firearm possession after he allegedly fired shots at another person outside a bar.

Kenneth Ray, 39, of York, is accused of shooting the victim three times, hitting him once in the leg, according to the criminal complaint. The victim was sent to the hospital for treatment.

The altercation occurred outside of M&M Lounge on the 500 block of Maryland Avenue in York, according to the police.

Ray allegedly entered the bar with the security guard at 10:59 p.m. on September 28, 2021. After waiting for around an hour, his target and another man finally entered the lounge.

Within 15 minutes of the victim’s arrival, Ray and the victim allegedly got into a verbal altercation inside the pub.

The victim and his friends allegedly left the bar around 12:20 am but returned a minute later.

When Ray tried to re-enter the bar, witnesses pushed him away. It is then said that Ray went around the back of the building to the northwest corner.

Ray allegedly met the bouncer outside the club at 12:27 a.m. and spoke with him before coming back inside.

At 2:30 a.m. on September 29, a witness who had just left the M&M Lounge told police that they had not seen anyone waiting outside.

At 12:32, the victim walked out of the bar. He says Ray shot at him three times, hitting his right leg. The victim turned around and ran south on Manchester Street.

Ray pleaded guilty to robbery in 2018, and the police say it means he can never own a gun again.
