What Happened To Gotye? Here’s What We Know

Gotye

Gotye, Wouter “Wally” De Backer, better known by his stage name, is an Australian musician who was born in Belgium and rose to prominence after the release of his single Somebody That I Used to Know in 2011. Following the publication of his debut album Boardface, the Grammy Award winner generated a buzz, and his follow-up album Like Drawing Blood brought him even more praise.

Following the success of Making Mirrors, which featured Somebody That I Used to Know, Gotye rose to fame on a global scale.

Gotye won Grammys for Record of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and Best Alternative Music Album as a result of the album’s success.

Gotye announced that he would no longer create music under his stage name

However, he later revealed that he is working on a new album. Gotye had previously said that he would no longer produce music under his stage name.

Many people believed that Gotye would keep producing music to perform on the awards stage once more after he won three Grammys. Gotye, though, chose a different path. He said that he had finished recording music under the moniker Gotye in a blog post. He wrote, “There won’t be any new Gotye music.”

Wait, maybe there will be, he said with a shred of optimism. “At this time, I’m not fully certain. There are numerous possibilities. Even though he has stopped putting out music under his name, Gotye is still quite active in the music industry. He is a part of the band The Basic, which is still putting out songs. He founded two record labels as well.

Fans of Gotye’s music have a reason for optimism because he recently mentioned the possibility of releasing a new album. He said in June 2018 that the album would include a tribute to Jean-Jacques Perrey, a pioneer of electronic music. Live at the Strongroom, a live album recorded by Gotye’s colleagues from The Basics was released in July 2020.

Gotye has frequently expressed his appreciation for the creation of music. Therefore, it is not surprising that he is delaying the release of his eagerly anticipated fourth album. One Redditor clarified:

He’s been putting in fucking ever on LP4. I mean, I listened to an interview from a few years ago about putting together an album gradually until he’s satisfied with it, and it made perfect sense to me (like how his last two went). So it’s not as though he hasn’t been active. He must have put a lot of effort into creating a unified record.

CNN incorrectly claimed that Gotye committed suicide in 2012

Gotye committed suicide, according to a CNN report that appeared on iReport in the middle of 2012. In the report, it said:

“It was claimed that Gotye had shot himself in the head with a 9mm handgun around 4:32 a.m. EST. He was declared dead at 4:45 AM, and the inquiry determined that suicide was the cause of death. Soon after, family and friends confirmed it.

Because the source seemed reliable, many trusted the information. On CNN iReport, anyone in the world could submit a story without CNN’s approval. Although the fake news was posted by a user going by the name of MJTheDestroy, it didn’t stop people from spreading it.

Gotye tweeted, “I’m not dead,” refuting allegations that he had passed away.
