After high school, he enlisted in the American Army and worked as a DJ for the American Forces Radio Network. After receiving his Army discharge, Cash collaborated with Hank Williams Jr. until he signed a record deal with Musicor Records in 1965.

He signed with United Artists Records a year later, and his 1968 song “The Sounds of Goodbye” just missed the Country Top 40. His biggest hit, “Six White Horses,” a song dedicated to John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr., was released in late 1969 when he was still contracted to Epic Records.
