David Khari Webber ‘Dave’ Chappelle was born on August 24, 1973, in Washington, D.C., as the only child of William David Chappelle III and his wife Yvonne K. Chappelle Seon, both college professors. His father worked at Antioch College, while his mother was a professor at Prince George’s Community College. Dave spent the most of his childhood in Silver Spring, Maryland, where he also attended Woodlin Elementary School. Following his parents’ divorce, he returned to Washington, D.C., with his mother, and enrolled at Duke Ellington School of the Arts, where he majored in theatrical arts and graduated in 1991.

Beginnings of a Career

After finishing his education, young Dave came to New York City to seek a career in the comedy business, where he rapidly attracted the attention of the audience, becoming fairly popular in the NYC comedy club circuit. With his reputation growing, he starred in HBO’s TV series “Def Comedy Jam,” which led to his first real acting role in Mel Brooks’ 1993 comedy picture “Robin Hood: Men in Tights,” in which he played Ahchoo. Chappelle rose to prominence in 1996 after participating in the TV comedy series “Buddies,” where he played the recurrent role of Dave Carlisle.

Dave Chappelle’s Show

This was followed by a cameo in the Oscar-winning comedy film “The Nutty Professor,” starring Eddie Murphy, who was also a major influence on Dave’s humorous profile. Following a series of appearances on HBO’s stand-up comedy show “Half-Hour” in 1997 and 1998, Chappelle featured as Thurgood Jenkins (aka Sir Smoke-a-Lot) in the 1998 comedy film, for which he also wrote and produced. The film became a cult classic in the stoner cinema genre, and he landed a role alongside Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in the Golden Globe-nominated romantic comedy “You’ve Got Mail.”

Career

Throughout the late 1990s, Dave featured in successful films like as “200 Cigarettes” and “Screwed,” before launching his own TV comedy special, “Dave Chappelle: Killin’ Them Softly,” in 2000. Between 2003 to 2006, he worked on his own show, “Chappelle’s Show,” which aired on Comedy Central for three seasons. Dave rose to notoriety in September 2004 when he hosted a free music event in New York City’s borough of Brooklyn called Block Party, which featured various popular music acts such as The Roots, Kanye West, Mos Def, and Erykah Badu, to name a few.

In 2005, he produced the documentary film “Block Party All-Stars Featuring Dave Chappelle” (also known as “Dave Chappelle’s Block Party”) about it, which was a huge economic triumph, wrecking box offices across the United States and making over $11.7 million.

After a hiatus from his comic career, Dave Chappelle made a comeback in 2013 by acting in the biographical documentary film “Richard Pryor: Omit the Logic,” which was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award.

In 2015, he starred as Morris in Spike Lee’s critically acclaimed crime drama-comedy “Chi-Raq,” which was followed by a $60 million contract with one of the most successful streaming platforms today — Netflix. Dave has so far released four comedy specials under Netflix’s production: “The Bird Revelation,” “Sticks & Stones,” “Equanimity,” and “Quincy,” the latter two of which received Primetime Emmy Award nominations.

Dave’s most recent on-screen performance was in the 2018 Oscar-winning music drama film “A Star Is Born,” in which he played George ‘Noodles’ Stone, the best friend of Jackson ‘Jack’ Maine, the primary protagonist portrayed by Bradley Cooper, who also directed the film.

During his nearly 30-year career in the entertainment sector, Chappelle has received two nominations, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and the prestigious Grammy Award for his comedy special studio album titled “The Age of Spin & Deep In the Heart of Texas.”
Dave has appeared on some of the most popular television shows and talk shows in the United States, including “Late Show with David Letterman,” “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” and “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah,” to name a few.
