Stephen Antony Smith was born on October 14, 1967, in Bronx borough of New York City. He was raised together with four older sisters and one younger brother, who died in a car accident in 1992. His family originally comes from the Virgin Islands where his father was a manager of a hardware store. He comes from a mixed ethnic group of Afro-Americans and holds an American Nationality.

Talking about his education, Stephen is a graduate of Thomas Edison High School in Queens. He is a very talented person with lots of interest, After his high school, he joined the Fashion Institute of Technology for a year and got a basketball scholarship after that. With his scholarship, he attended Winston-Salem State University and was trained by Clarence Gaines.

Stephen A Smith Professional Career

Stephen initiated his career with print media with Winston-Salem Journal and several other companies including New York Daily News, and Greensboro News and Record. In 1994, he worked as a writer for The Philadelphia Inquirer until 2007. Aside from that, he was also an NBA columnist for Philadelphia 76ers.

In the year 2008, he left the company to start his own blog. His impressive blogging got him in Philadelphia Inquirer in 2010. In addition to writing, Snith began a hard-on Radio program in 2005 along with a weekday show on ESPN radio station, WEPN. Later, he also contributed to FOX Sports Radio for a while.

In 2010, Smith got a morning show as a host and the following year he ended the show becoming a resident FSR NBA Insider. Since 2017, he worked in ESPN as a host in a daily program on WEPN leaving Sirius XM Radio.

In 1999 from CNN/SI, He started his television career. During 2005, he hosted a daily show titled “Quite Frankly on ESPN. However, it got canceled in 2007 and Stephen started as an analyst for NBA after that. Currently, he is a  sports analyst for ESPN and mostly known for his provocative analysis and unfriendly delivery.

In 2009, he announced his leave from ESPN in May on his blog but later in 2012 he joined ESPN permanently on a daily show, “First Take”, under the new format called “Embrace Debate”. In late 2014, he signed a contract worth $3 million per year with ESPN.

Smith has broadcasted a team of Top Rank for the boxing PPV event of Manny Pacquiao vs. Jessie Vargas in 2016. Finally, in 2019, Smith was the commentator of UFC.

Acting Career

Alongside his professional career, he has appeared in some of the famous movies. He debuted with a romantic comedy “I Think I Love My Wife” directed by Chris Rock, portraying Allan in 2007.  He has also made an appearance on a TV series “General Hospital” on ABC as a cameo for three episodes.

Aside from that, Smith has appeared in a series of commercials for Oberto beef jerky products in early 2014. In addition, He is also seen in “The Little Voice in Your Stomach”. commercial alongside sports figures.
