Scottish Singer-Songwriter Rab Noakes Passed Away At Age 75

The Scottish man, who was born in Cupar, Fife, passed away unexpectedly in the hospital, according to singer Barbara Dickson, who shared the news online.

He was a founding member of Stealers Wheel and a solo performer who put out more than 20 albums and appeared at events like Celtic Connections.

Noakes worked as a senior music producer at the BBC before starting his own production company.

His frequent musical partners included Dickson, who referred to him as “my dear and old friend.”

She also wrote on Twitter, “I am shocked. The Everly Brothers, the Flying Burrito Brothers, and steadfast love of songs, especially traditional music, were just a few of the things we had in common.

“Good night, Rab. I wish you a peaceful rest.

Val McDermid, a writer, wrote on Facebook: “In tears at the news of Rab Noakes’ death. Since I was 14, I have known and loved this kind, talented, and compassionate man. I have never met a kindlier soul. or an improved musician.

“He was his usual upbeat self when we last messaged, which was just a few days ago. In the coming year, we intended to co-record a few songs.

Other well-known individuals from Scotland’s arts community also released tributes.

Julie Fowlis, a Gaelic singer, described him as “an iconic and generous musician and a gentleman.” Being with him was always enjoyable and educational.

It says, “Fois shiorraidh dha anam.”

Iona Fyfe, a Scottish singer, wrote online: “Heartbroken to hear of Rab Noakes’ passing. He was incredibly uplifting, time-giving, unbelievably kind, welcoming, and supportive.

Horse McDonald, a singer-songwriter, called Noakes a “giant of a man” who will be “sorely missed.” Bryan Burnett, a broadcaster, claimed that Noakes hired him as a producer for BBC Radio Scotland.

He said, “I learned so much from him about the country-pop music we both loved.

“All of us at BBC Scotland are deeply saddened to hear the news about Rab Noakes,” BBC Scotland director Steve Carson said.

“In addition to some outstanding programs he produced here at the BBC, his contribution to Scottish music cannot be overstated.

“All of his fans across the country, as well as his family and friends, are in our thoughts.”
