Neill was killed off in the series, although Steven Knight, the show’s creator, acknowledged that Neill didn’t want to go.
The writer talked about the moment he told the actor his ideas for Campbell during the season five premiere. He added that despite Neill’s genius, he believed the plot for his character had reached its peak.
“He was in New Zealand, so I decided to call him instead of just sending him the script. I called Sam and told him that this persona had been great and brilliant. And he declared, “I don’t want to die,” the author said.
He continued by saying that he assured Neill he would think twice before killing Campbell “like a coward.”
Nevertheless, despite what he had informed the actor, Knight was aware that Campbell would eventually die, but out of respect for Neill, he had forewarned the actor.
When the writer called Neill again after a week to let him know it was certain, the actor immediately responded, “Absolutely, terrific.”
Sam Neill claimed he missed the performance
After his character was abruptly killed off in season two at the Epsom racetrack, many fans speculated that the actor might unexpectedly return.
Neill talked about the theories and his time working on the series during an appearance on RadioTimes.com.
“I adore Peaky Blinders, and I believe Steve [Knight] writes beautifully. I’m Cillian, Helen, and Paul Anderson’s (Arthur Shelby) biggest fan, and I always love it when they come back because I kind of missed them,” the actor remarked.
Then he discussed his time working on Peaky Blinders, noting that even though he had an amazing time and learned a lot, he had to film in “some really grim places of the world.”
Even though Neill’s character was malevolent, he loved portraying it. Many fans interpreted his response to suggest that he might be returning to the program, even though he did not directly address the speculations.
Unfortunately, Neill never made his eagerly awaited comeback, and the series ended abruptly as well.
But for Shelby and his Birmingham team, the narrative isn’t over yet. In 2021, they will make their last and final film appearance, according to Knight.
