Rex was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, on March 23, 1952, in Vernon, Texas, and his family then relocated to Stillwater, Oklahoma, before settling in Huntsville, Texas. He was reared with two sisters and was actively active in the Boy Scouts of America organization during his youth, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He began working at a young age, first as a busboy and subsequently as a janitor.

During his senior year at Huntsville High School, he was a member of the school band’s percussion section, as well as the all-district and all-region bands. He attended the University of Texas on a college scholarship for the Longhorn Band and was also associated with the marching band, the Tejas Club, during his time there. He earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and began working for Exxon Company USA as a production engineer in 1975, after graduation.

Tillerson rose up the Exxon ranks, eventually becoming the general manager of Exxon USA’s central production division in 1989. He was named president of Production Khorat Inc., Esso Exploration, and Exxon Yemen Inc. six years later. He rose through the ranks of the corporation, and his net worth climbed dramatically when he was appointed vice president of Exxon Ventures. Following the merger of Exxon and Mobil in 1999, he was made executive vice president of ExxonMobile Development Company, and in 2004 he was named president and director of Exxon Mobil, finally replacing Lee Raymond as CEO two years later. At the time, the corporation had already expanded into 200 countries, had 80,000 employees, and had a $400 billion yearly income.

Tillerson has maintained ties with President Vladimir Putin as Exxon expanded its operations into Russia. He became acquaintances with many other oil executives in the area and became a trustee of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Rex continued to assist with the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), eventually becoming their national president. He also received the World Petroleum Council’s Dewhurst Award for his contributions to the oil business.

Politics as a Career

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice suggested Rex for the position of Secretary of State, which was supported by former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. He was the leading candidate for the position and was eventually sworn in, after which he made multiple abroad visits, meeting with foreign ministers from Russia, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Italy, and the United Arab Emirates. He later traveled to Mexico and Asia, visiting a number of countries.
