Raw Ewry was born on October 14, 1873, in Lafayette, Indiana, United States of America. Raymond “Ray” Clarence Ewry is his real name. There is no information about his parents’ and siblings’ names or occupations. He is a citizen of the United States. Similarly, he was of Caucasian ethnicity. He was born under the sign of Libra and practiced Christianity.

Concerning his educational background, he completed his education at a local school in his hometown. He did, however, attend Purdue University. Purdue University awarded him undergraduate and graduate degrees in civil and mechanical engineering. In the late 1890s, he had even taught engineering.

Career

Raw Ewry chose to be an athlete in his professional life. But things were not so simple. He had Polio when he was 7 years old, which forced him to use a wheelchair for the rest of his life. But, thanks to his determination and willpower, he decided to train his legs, and he gradually began to gain strength in them. In a few years, he began playing football and captained his university’s track team.

This accomplished athlete later focused primarily on jumping, either standing long jump or standing triple jump. He also set new world records in the standing high jump, standing long jump, and standing triple jump. He has represented his country on numerous occasions, most notably at the Olympic Games. In 1900, he made his Olympic debut in Paris. Later, in 1904 in St. Louis, Missouri, and 1906 and 1908 in London, he gave brilliant performances. From 1898 to 1910, he was a 15-time national champion in standing events.

He competed for the New York Athletic Club at the club level, where he helped the club win 15 U.S. amateur track championships. Unfortunately, the Olympic Committee discontinued international standing long jump competitions in the 1930s. As an engineer, he went on to design boilers for US naval vessels during World War I. He was a lead engineer on the construction of an aqueduct that still transports water from the Catskill Mountains to New York City.

As a result, he later decided to pursue a career as a Hydraulic engineer. Without a doubt, most sportswriters regard him as the greatest jumper in Olympic history. The most important fact is that he accomplished all of this while defying biological adversity, as he was once expected to be confined to a wheelchair.

He has established a legacy by winning a record-breaking ten gold medals in four Olympics without losing any of the competitions in which he competed. In 1983, the Olympic Committee inducted him into the United States Olympic Hall of Fame for his outstanding career. The Greater Lafayette community even erected a monument to him at Lafayette Jefferson High School in honor of their hometown hero. In 2014, a section of road in Indiana was named Raymond Clarence Ewry Memorial Parkway in his honor.
