People are curious about Nikki Haley’s decision to change her religion.

Critics have pointed out that embracing one’s roots can appear to be a political act in and of itself following Nikki Haley’s Republican National Convention speech.

Nimrata Randhawa, the former governor of South Carolina and current US ambassador to the United Nations, was born to Indian immigrants from Punjab and was given the nickname “Nikki” as a child.

She is reserved about her Sikh heritage and emphasizes her Christian conversion. In 2001, her race was listed as “white” on her voter registration card.

Experts familiar with Haley and other conservative Indian American politicians note that some appear to have an on-again, off-again relationship with their Indian identity.
