Matthew Gilmour was born in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1991 to Kay and Stewart Gilmour. Kyle is his only sibling, and he has three sisters: Chloe, Bethany, and Ashlea. During his childhood, his parents were music professors at a secondary school. His mother was the Head of Music at St. Machar Academy, while his father was a flugelhorn player in a brass band.
His father died of cancer in 2008, at the age of 48, leaving his mother to raise cash for CLAN Cancer Support.

In 2009, the pair met in Paris while on a Mormon mission trip. Elizabeth was taken with him and they began dating. In an interview, Matthew admitted that because of Elizabeth’s confidence and charisma, he didn’t recognize her as the previous abductee from the headlines. Following their initial meeting, the two met in their respective hometowns of Aberdeen and Salt Lake City. He proposed to her three years later, in 2012, near her house. ‘I just said very simply, Elizabeth Ann Smart, will you marry me?’ he recalls. And I wasn’t nervous after that.’

The pair married in a secret ceremony on the beaches of Hawaii the same year. In 2015, the newlyweds welcomed their first child, a daughter called Chloe. James, a new addition to their family, was born in April 2017. Olivia, the last addition to their family, was born in November 2018.
Matthew Gilmour- Professional Career
Matthew is a Mormon missionary and an Elder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He worked at his church’s Paris branch, where he eventually met his future wife. Gilmour has a Facebook profile with the same name, but the mission’s goals remain unknown.
He also participates in activism with his wife, supporting her campaign for victims of child trafficking and abuse, as well as the Elizabeth Smart Foundation.
