Educational history

The family lived in South Africa and Namibia for a while before relocating to Foster City, California in 1977, where Peter attended primary school.

He attended Foster City’s Bowditch Middle School before graduating from San Mateo High School in 1985. After that, he enrolled at Stanford University, where he earned a BA in 1989.

He started “The Stanford Review” in college and was its editor-in-chief. Peter then continued his education at Stanford Law School, where he graduated with a J.D. in 1992.

Career Start-Up

After working as a securities attorney at Sullivan & Cromwell, Peter began his full-time career as a judicial clerk for Judge James Larry Edmondson at the US Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit.

After working there for seven months, Peter was employed by Credit Suisse as a futures trader, and then he wrote speeches for William Bennett, a former US Secretary of Education.

Rise to Fame: PayPal, Confinity Inc., and Theil Capital

Peter founded his own business, an investment fund called Thiel Capital Management, in 1996. He co-founded Confinity Inc., a software company, with Luke Nosek, Max Levchin, and Ken Howery in 1999, the same year that they introduced PayPal as a money-transfer service at Confinity.

Up until the company was sold to eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion, Peter served as its CEO. He was referred to as the “Don of the PayPal Mafia” because of his 3.7 percent interest in the company at the time of its sale, which was worth over $55 million.
