Marva Hicks, a well-known R&B singer, and actress passed away on September 16 at age 47. Her cause of death has not yet been determined, and it is unknown whether she had any health issues. Her family and husband, Akwasi Taha, announced the announcement to Ebony magazine.

Marva Hicks was born in Petersburg, but her exact date of birth is unknown. Her television appearances on One Life to Live, Sister, Sister, and Star Trek: Voyager propelled her to notoriety. She portrayed Roberta Williams in both Asunder (1999) and Labor Day (2013).
Aside from her roles in television and cinema, she was best known for her Broadway and off-Broadway performances. Motown the Musical, Caroline or Change, and Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music were among her most memorable performances.
She has received the Helen Hayes Award three times and has toured with Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, James Ingram, and Sheryl Crow, among others. Her song Never Been In Love Before peaked at number seven on the R&B chart in 1991.
The song appears on her debut self-titled album, released in the same year. She studied theater in New York before beginning a prosperous career in the entertainment industry.
In addition, she attended acting workshops in Washington, D.C. Before releasing Looking Over My Shoulder in 1981, she recorded a few demos.
Hicks then sang in Lena Horne’s Broadway show for three years and met Stevie Wonder while touring London. Midway through the 1980s, she began touring with him and contributed background vocals to his debut album, Characters.
She signed with Polydor Records Ltd. in the late 1980s and released her debut self-titled album in 1991. It was, however, a commercial flop.
Even in The Lion King, a musical drama based on the 1994 Walt Disney Animation Studios animated film of the same name, she portrayed Rafiki.
She performed the gospel song “There’s No Hiding Place Down Here” in an episode of the space opera television series Babylon 5. She was later featured on the Mosquito album by the indie rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
