What role did Martha Mitchell have in the Watergate scandal?

Martha Elizabeth Beall Mitchell (1918 – 1976), also known as Martha Mitchell, was the outspoken and uncontrolled American socialite wife of John N. Mitchell. Richard Nixon, the 37th President of the United States, appointed him as the 67th Attorney General of the United States.

According to sources, Martha was a former secretary and teacher. On December 30, 1957, she wed her spouse John N. Mitchell. In 1961, Marty, the couple’s daughter, was born.

In 1968, following her husband’s appointment as Attorney General by President Nixon, the couple moved to Washington, D.C., and began residing in the infamous Watergate complex.

Martha had already earned the feared moniker “Martha the Mouth” due to her frequent requests for political information from the media.

According to accounts, Watergate is now linked to a major political scandal involving President Richard Nixon’s government from 1972 to 1974.

His administration was purportedly hindered by evidence of its involvement in the June 1972 invasion and bugging of the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) at the Watergate complex.

Martha was reportedly the first individual to speak publicly about Nixon’s government’s despicable involvement in the Watergate scandal. Martha was a well-known informant during the administration of Richard Nixon.

The White House apparently did everything in its power at the time to silence Mitchell, including defying her, mistreating her, and publicly labeling her as mentally ill.

When purportedly the truth was disclosed and Nixon’s role in the Watergate scandal was uncovered, Matha Mitchell was promptly acquitted and praised as a very visionary woman.
