He joined forces with Mel Schacher on bass guitar and Don Brewer on drums to establish the American hard-rock group Grand Funk Railroad in 1968. In 1973, keyboardist Craig Frost joined the group.

The lead guitarist, lead singer, and the majority of the songs’ songwriter for the group was Mark. One of the band’s most well-known songs, “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home),” was published in 1970 and became an instant hit.
