Marcelo was a young player for the Brazilian under-18 and under-20 sides, becoming the first foreign player to be vital for this youth arrangement and the sixth foreign player to wear the Brazilian public group’s shirt in an authority match.

On September 12, 2007, he accepted his first call-up for a match against Peru, and on November 20, 2007, he scored his first two international goals in a 2010 World Cup qualifier against Venezuela.
