Lori Poland was kidnapped in August 1983 from her yard in Sheridan, Colorado. Robert Paul Theiret sexually abused her before abandoning her in a 15-foot sewage pit toilet outside Denver, Colorado. Fortunately, two Pennsylvania bird watchers hiking in the same area three days later discovered her.
She was a lucky and strong girl to have survived three days in the pit toilet. Lori was rescued and taken to the hospital, where she met a pediatrician named Dick Krugman. Lori’s childhood doctor is still a friend.
Lori Poland is a therapist now
Lori Poland, a well-known child abuse survivor, is now a licensed therapist. She is employed at Denver Counseling Options. Poland is a therapist, advocate, and author in addition to being a therapist. She is also a devoted wife to her husband and mother to her three children.
She co-founded the National Foundation to End Child Abuse and Neglect (EndCAN) with her childhood doctor and now-friend, Dick Krugman. The organization’s mission is to assist children like Lori. Lori Poland also released her moving memoir “I Live Here.” In her book, readers can follow her traumatic childhood experiences, healing process, and advancement of advocacy in adulthood.
“When I was ready, I always wanted to share my entire story,” said the CEO of the EndCAN foundation in an interview. I didn’t expect it to be filled with both fear and excitement.”

Robert Paul Thiret, the kidnapper of Lori Poland, is still at large
Robert Paul Thiret, Lori Poland’s kidnapper, was sentenced to ten years in prison in September 1984 on charges of kidnapping, sexual abuse, and abandoning her to die. During a special hearing before Littleton District Court Judge Charles Friedman, the kidnapper pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a child and attempting first-degree murder.
However, Robert Paul Thiret was only imprisoned for six years. On December 7, 1990, he was released. Thiret was eligible for release in 1989, but due to public pressure, authorities decided to keep him behind bars. In May, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that due to the delay, Thiret had to be released rather than paroled under the law in effect at the time of the incident.
In June 1990, after serving six years in state prison, the kidnapper was transferred to Jefferson County Jail for telephone harassment. The public was outraged by his release.
