Who is Leonardo da Vinci?

Leonardo da Vinci was a Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, inventor, military engineer, and draftsman who embodied all a Renaissance man should be. Da Vinci studied the principles of science and nature, which substantially influenced his work, as he was gifted with a curious mind and a smart intellect. Over the ages, his drawings, paintings, and other works have impacted numerous artists and engineers.

Early Life and Bio

On April 15, 1452, Leonardo da Vinci was born in a farmhouse outside the village of Anchiano in Tuscany, Italy (approximately 18 miles west of Florence). Da Vinci was reared by his father and stepmother after being born out of wedlock to prestigious Florentine notary Ser Piero and a young peasant lady named Caterina. He relocated to his father’s estate in nearby Vinci (the town from which his surname is derived) when he was five years old, where he lived with his uncle and grandparents.

Educational Background

Da Vinci’s artistic abilities were evident from an early age, despite his lack of formal schooling beyond basic reading, writing, and mathematics instruction. Around the age of 14, da Vinci began a long apprenticeship in Florence with the well-known artist Andrea del Verrocchio. Metalworking, leather arts, carpentry, sketching, painting, and sculpture were among the technical abilities he studied. In 1473, he made a pen-and-ink drawing of a scene in the Arno valley, which is his first known dated work.

Career

Da Vinci became a master artist in Florence’s Guild of Saint Luke when he was 20 years old and opened his workshop. He did, however, continue to work with del Verrocchio for another five years. Del Verrocchio’s “Baptism of Christ” is considered to have been completed about 1475 with the help of a pupil who painted part of the backdrop and the young angel clutching Jesus’ garment.

According to artist Giorgio Vasari’s book Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects, del Verrocchio was so humbled by his pupil’s superior talent that he never picked up a paintbrush again. (However, most experts consider Vasari’s story as fanciful.) Da Vinci earned his first independent commission for an altarpiece in a chapel within Florence’s Palazzo Vecchio in 1478, shortly after leaving del Verrocchio’s studio. The Augustinian monks of Florence’s San Donato a Scopeto commissioned him to paint “Adoration of the Magi” three years later. The young artist, on the other hand, would flee the city and abandon both commissions before they could be completed.

Leonardo da Vinci Was a Homosexual

Many historians believe da Vinci was homosexual: in 1476, da Vinci and four other young men were prosecuted with sodomy, a crime punishable by exile or death, according to Florentine court records. The allegations against the 24-year-old da Vinci were dropped after no witnesses turned up to testify, but his whereabouts remained unknown for the next two years. Michelangelo, Donatello, and Sandro Botticelli were among the prominent Florentine artists who were known to be homosexual. Indeed, homosexuality was so prevalent in Renaissance Florence that the name “florenzer” evolved to mean “gay” in German.
