In the midst of a severe drought in South Korea, the actress from My Liberation Notes, Lee El, discusses the consequences of water misuse during the upcoming Water Bomb event. She was concerned about how the water utilized for the event may be redistributed to combat the drought.

The highly anticipated Water Bomb event is a splash-themed summer music festival. The event’s features include water cannon battles, water sprays, and other musical performances.

This year, the event is gaining popularity because of a lineup that includes MAMAMOO Hwasa, EXO Kai, ZICO, Jay Park, Jessi, Simon Dominic, and others.

The Seoul edition of the event will be held at Jamsil Stadium and will feature water gun battles and a pool party. However, this year’s season coincides with the winter drought that has continued well into the summer.

Lee El’s criticism was sparked by PSY’s remarks about the use of water during his summer performances.

The event was announced on June 12 by Lee El, who noted that the city might make better use of the water consumed during the festival. She stated that more than 300 tonnes of water would be used at the concert.

Lee El said,

“I request that the 300 tons of water used in the Water Bomb performance be sprayed over the Soyang River.”

This statement appears to be a response to one of PSY’s earlier comments. During his latest appearance on MBC’s Radio Star, the K-Pop superstar generated controversy.

The artist discussed his water-soaked summer performance, which was temporarily canceled due to the outbreak, on May 4th. He confirmed that the event’s water was safe to consume. PSY stated,

“I only drink potable water. Water is pretty expensive. It costs approximately 300 tons each performance.”

This remark sparked discussion, with some Koreans pointing out that wasting that much water during a severe drought season might have serious implications. Others urged alternatively for the use of agricultural water.

PSY’s summer concerts are notorious for their enormous water usage, as the idea of his act is to spray water from all sides and immerse the audience.

In light of this, Korean netizens have viewed Lee El’s recent statements as a much-needed display of anger. However, a portion of the audience criticized the actor, arguing that as long as the concertgoers purchased the water, it was acceptable to use it for festivals.

This caused the actor to tweet again, stating:

“Fine. If you are angry, express it, and if you wish to swear, curse. Yes. Because individuals think differently.”

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the winter drought in South Korea is predicted to continue until spring and early summer. This month’s precipitation total was only 5.8mm, which is approximately 5.6% of the average monthly total of 104.2mm.

Due to the intense drought, the sources of the Soyang River had already dried up, proving Lee El’s statement to be true.

Lee El’s announcement comes only a few weeks after the conclusion of the hit drama My Liberation Notes, in which she starred with Son Seok-Koo, Kim Ji-won, and Lee Min-ki.

In the drama, the South Korean beauty, age 39, portrays Yeom Ki Jung, the eldest of three siblings.
