Douglas moved to New York City and started working in sales for Aveda before helping to establish the Aveda Institute, a hairstyling and grooming school. After finishing first in his class, he enrolled in its cosmetology school and worked as a colorist at the New York-based hair salon Arrojo Studio. He began his career by appearing on the reality shows What Not to Wear and While You Were Out. In 2002, an Arrojo customer informed him of a casting call for a makeover show.

Kyan gave the producers a picture of himself as well as a brief bio he’d written. He was called in for an audition and was soon named the show’s Grooming Guru. Kyan appeared on soundtrack CD and DVD-based events, magazine covers, and discussion shows as a member of Queer Eye. Kyan is also the inventor of Beautified and a L’Oréal product ambassador. In 2004, he was asked to speak at his alma mater, Loyola University New Orleans. In 2009, he took over as host of TLC’s Ten Years Younger (beginning with the fourth season).
