She read the nightly, one-minute hourly news while working for the channel. Karen was eventually promoted to Eyewitness News as a reporter and began co-anchoring Eyewitness Investigation News with a friend and colleague, Hoda Kotb.

During her time at WWL, she aggressively covered the Katrina hurricane. She has received a great deal of respect and acclaim for her work as an investigative reporter throughout the years. Swensen has received the Gabriel Award, the Garcia Award, the Associated Press Award, and the Club Award in recognition of her work. She has also received five Emmy Awards.
