Judge Tanya Acker was allowed to work as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable Dorothy Wright Nelson on the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Her duties included advising and recommending Ninth Circuit justices on a variety of problems, as well as preparing Judge Nelson for oral arguments on cases before the Court. The United States Department of Justice’s Office of the Solicitor General then granted her a Bristow Fellowship.
Tanya was also able to create her own law firm, and her legal work ranged from civil litigation involving public and private institutions to numerous constitutional challenges to business counseling and help. The ACLU’s First Amendment Award was given to her for her successful advocacy of the homeless in a case against the City of Santa Barbara.
She was even able to help the Kerry/Edwards presidential campaign in California by reaching out to the Hollywood industry. Acker worked as the Deputy Candidacy Manager for Los Angeles City Councilman Bernard C. Parks’ mayoral campaign. She then worked as General Counsel for a company that created pollution control devices.
