Career
Thurston began his career with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in 2002, where he won the NRL premiership in 2004. He then moved to the North Queensland Cowboys in 2005, where he played in the grand final that year. He made his Queensland debut that year, followed by his Australian debut in 2006. He won the Wally Lewis Medal for Player of the Series in the 2008 State of Origin series. He was also selected as halfback of the Australian Aboriginal team of the century in 2008. Thurston was the only player to appear in every game of Queensland’s eight-year State of Origin winning streak, having appeared in 36 straight Origin matches since his debut in 2005.
During the 2015 State of Origin Series, Thurston set a new record for most points in State of Origin history. Thurston also co-captained the North Queensland Cowboys to their first NRL Premiership in 2015, alongside teammate Matt Scott. He also won the 2015, Clive Churchill Medal, for the man of the match in the grand final.
Thurston developed and launched the Johnathan Thurston Academy (JTAcademy) in 2018, and he is now the Managing Director of the organization. The JTAcademy provides a platform for Australian adolescents to gain access to the educational and vocational tools they need to find meaningful work.
