John Hume: A Nobel Prize Winner’s Portrait Is Revealed In Westminster

John Hume

In Westminster, a formal picture of the late John Hume, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, was revealed. The Speaker’s advisory group on works of art ordered the portrait.

Based on sketches he created of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) founding member in 2016, it was painted by Northern Ireland artist Colin Davidson.

On Monday, the image was unveiled in Portcullis House. One of Northern Ireland’s most prominent politicians, Mr. Hume was a key player in the peace negotiations that resulted in the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.

Along with David Trimble, the then-leader of the Ulster Unionist Party, he received the Nobel Peace Prize.

“One of the real giants,”

Sir Lindsay Hoyle, Speaker of the Commons, expressed his “pleasure” in accepting the piece into the collection of parliamentary art.

One of the “real giants of Northern Irish politics,” as he put it, was Mr. Hume.

He was also among the most significant and influential lawmakers of his generation, and he will be sorely missed by his colleagues and members at Westminster and throughout Europe, the speaker continued.

The John Hume portrait by artist Colin Davidson was started in 2022.

He remarked,

“Six years ago, I had the honor of spending time with John Hume, sketching and drawing a man who had grown to be a personal idol for me.

I went back to these drawings over the past year and came up with something fresh, a new portrait painting that, I think, portrays John’s clear vision and character strength.

Numerous notable public people, including politicians, artists, actors, and singers, have been painted by Mr. Davidson.

In 2016, he also revealed his portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
