Who is John C. Reilly?

John C Reilly (born John Christopher Reilly) is an actor, comedian, musician, voice actor, screenwriter, and producer from the United States. He made his cinematic debut in Brian De Palma’s war drama Casualties of War (1989). Days of Thunder (1990), What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), and The River Wild all featured Reilly in supporting parts (1994).

He appeared in the films Hard Eight (1996), Boogie Nights (1997), and Magnolia (1998), all directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (1999). Reilly was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe Award for his work in Chicago (2002). On both Gangs of New York (2002) and The Aviator (2006), he collaborated with filmmaker Martin Scorsese (2004).

In 2007, he starred in the comedy Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, for which he was nominated for a Grammy Award and a second Golden Globe Award for the song “Walk Hard.” Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006) and Step Brothers (2007), both directed by Adam McKay, starring Reilly with Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen (2008).

He voiced the title character in the financially successful Wreck-It Ralph film series (2012-2018), as well as appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) and Kong: Skull Island (2017). Since 2010, Reilly has played the titular character on the television series Check It Out! with Dr. Steve Brule, which is based on Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! In 2018, he starred in the movie Stan and Ollie as comic Oliver Hardy. He earned the Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best Actor for the part. Reilly is a member of the band John Reilly and Friends and has appeared on stage in True West (2000), for which he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play.

In 1989, Reilly made his cinematic debut as PFC Herbert Hatcher in Brian De Palma’s military thriller Casualties of War. Reilly’s role was originally scripted as a minor one, but De Palma was so impressed with his performance that it was greatly increased. In Tony Scott’s Days of Thunder in June 1990, he played Buck, Tom Cruise’s NASCAR car chief. In September, Reilly performed alongside Sean Penn as an Irish hoodlum named Stevie McGuire in the crime picture State of Grace; Reilly had previously starred alongside Penn as a monk in the comedy We’re No Angels (1989).

In the 1992 film Hoffa, Reilly played an acquaintance of Jimmy Hoffa (Jack Nicholson) who testified against him at Hoffa’s trial. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993) featured Reilly in a supporting role as one of the titular character’s (Johnny Depp) buddies. The River Wild (1994), in which Reilly co-starred with Kevin Bacon as a pair of outlaws who torment a family during a rafting trip, was his next role. In 1995, Reilly played a police constable in the psychological thriller Dolores Claiborne and a drug-addict drummer in the band that Jennifer Jason Leigh’s character joins in the drama Georgia.
