Joey Mantia began rollerblading as a self-described “rink rat,” frequently imploring his parents to take him to the neighborhood indoor skating rink. He spent a lot of time at public skating sessions and learned about speed skating by watching inline skating practice at the rink. After witnessing inline speed skating, Mantia decided to commit his life to “becoming the greatest speed skater in the world.”

In 2010, Mantia switched from inline speed skating to ice speed skating. He first traveled to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and then to Salt Lake City, Utah, two years later, to train with the national team. At the 2011 US Speed Skating Championships, Mantia finished fourth in the 5000 m, tenth in the 1000 m, and eighth in the 1500 m. Mantia first competed in the World Cup in early 2013. He found success again less than a year later, earning gold in the 1500m at the Berlin World Cup in December 2013, defeating his colleague Shani Davis, a two-time Olympic silver winner in the 1500m, and Russia’s Denis Yuskov, the defending world champion.

At the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, Mantia participated for Team USA in the 1000 m, 1500 m, and team pursuit, finishing 15th in the 1000 m, 22nd in the 1500 m, and 7th in the team pursuit. Mantia qualified for the 2018 United States Olympic Team in January 2018, winning the 1000 m and 1500 m races. He was also a candidate for the mass start. On December 13, 2021, Mantia won his second World Cup title in a row in Salt Lake City.
