Since Gabbard has been in the Army National Guard since 2003, many of those present are likely to be her fellow service members.

She went on a mission to Iraq while serving in this capacity. Almost everyone there would be one of Gabbard’s constituents, as she was elected to represent Hawaii’s Second Congressional District in 2012.

All politicians are expected to seem as though they enjoy patriotic festivals, but Gabbard is one of the few who doesn’t seem to be faking.

She is 36 years old, but she manages to exude both youthful energy and seriousness. Her politics are similarly ambivalent.

She is a Bernie Sanders supporter with an independent streak. She has gained notoriety for speaking out against foreign military involvement and advocating for better care for veterans.
