How did Noela Rukundo fare?

In January 2015, Noela Rukundo, who was residing in Melbourne, Australia, with her family, went back to her native Burundi to attend her stepmother’s burial.

But when she went back home a month later, she had no clue that she would be attending her own funeral. She is still troubled by what transpired throughout that month.

Balenga Kalala, Noela Rukundo’s husband, is said to have paid a squad of hitmen $7,000 to abduct and kill her after developing false suspicions about her adultery.

Noela contacted Kalala while at her stepmother’s funeral, and Kalala advised her to walk outdoors and breathe some fresh air. Noela was immediately threatened with a pistol and coerced into a car after leaving.

She was taken to a remote warehouse by the armed guys, where they bound her to a chair.

A fourth guy then acknowledged that Kalala had given them the order to kill her, but that they had refused to carry it out because they knew Noela’s brother and did not kill women and children.

The kidnappers phoned Kalala to show that the woman’s husband had tried to have her killed when she didn’t trust them after they had taken her. Rukundo fainted on the call when he said that he wanted her dead.

Later, the gunmen consented to assist Rukundo. They claimed to have slain Noela while keeping Kalala’s money.

On February 19, the kidnappers left Rukundo on the street with a suitcase containing proof that would implicate her husband.

Later, Balenga Kalala was detained and prosecuted. He was then found guilty and given a nine-year jail term. Kalala is qualified for parole as of 2022.

The tale of Noela Rukundo served as the inspiration for the 2021 film Death Saved My Life, starring Meagan Good.
