Padre Damaso, a fat Franciscan priest who served for many years in Ibarra’s birthplace of San Diego, attended the feast.
He publicly humiliated Ibarra’s late father.
The irate host would have jumped at the impolite friar and almost stabbed Damaso to death if Maria Clara hadn’t stepped in quickly enough.
As a consequence of Damaso persuading Capitan Tiago to deny the couple’s nuptials, Ibarra was excommunicated and his engagement to Maria Clara was annulled.
One day, Ibarra’s enemies launched an unarmed attack on the Guardia Civil station, causing the assailants to believe Ibarra was the one who started the uprising.
After the assault was failed, Ibarra was accused and arrested.
Elias, a guy, helped Ibarra escape from prison. Before departing, they snuck inside Capitan Tiago’s house.
Maria Clara explained how Padre Salvi, one of the priests, coerced her into giving over Ibarra’s letter, which was then used against him (Ibarra).
The letters Maria Clara’s late mother wrote are the reason for this. These allowed Maria Clara to confirm that Padre Damaso was her biological father.

What Caused Maria Clara’s Death?
After she fell ill, Padre Salvi coerced her into confessing by disclosing that Padre Damaso was really her biological father and threatening to make the information public if she did not turn up Ibarra’s goodbye letter.
She afterward provided Linares with entertainment at her father’s house. Later, Maria Clara, her father, and Linares were informed of Ibarra’s excommunication by Padre Salvi.
Maria Clara confined herself in her room after Ibarra was suspected of carrying out an assault using his goodbye letter because she was upset about her impending marriage.
She spotted Ibarra as she stepped off the balcony, and as they cried their goodbyes, he climbed the wall.
During their conversation, Ibarra learnt why Maria Clara had thrown away his parting letter. Elias and Ibarra sped away from the scene.
When Maria Clara learned that Ibarra had died, she was inconsolable.
She threatened to kill herself if Padre Damaso would not allow her to become a nun so she could forget Ibarra when he visited her.
Padre Damaso reluctantly gave his consent for Maria Clara to enter the monastery of St. Clara and become a nun.
Later, she seemed to be having a mental breakdown and went onto the church roof, which was spotted by several guards. In 1895, Maria Clara was unwell and died a few days later.
