In LA, Pink, Queen, And Alanis Pay Tribute To Taylor Hawkins

Taylor Hawkins

At a Los Angeles memorial event for Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, musicians such as Pink, Queen, and Def Leppard paid their respects.

They sang the songs he liked alongside the star’s former bandmates from Foo Fighters and Chevy Metal as fans honored his memory.

According to Dave Grohl, the lead singer of Foos, the performance honored the fact that “these many people united via one individual.”

Miley Cyrus, Rush, Cars, and Mötley Crüe were some famous visitors.

Before joining the Foo Fighters, Hawkins played drums for Alanis Morissette, who delivered a powerful rendition of You Oughta Know. Meanwhile, comedian Dave Chapelle surprised everyone by performing Radiohead’s Creep.

During the concert, Pink made multiple cameos. She sang a duet of Barracuda with Nancy Wilson of Heart, covered Queen’s Somebody To Love, a song that Hawkins frequently sang life, and closed the show with a performance of The Pretender with the Foo Fighters.

Def Leppard, a British rock band, remembers meeting Hawkins while he was a “20-year-old boy” working in a guitar store in Los Angeles.

“Five years after performing on Top Of The Pops in England, a young child enters the dressing room. Performing on the drums for Alanis Morissette “vocalist Joe Elliot came to mind.

“In honor of Taylor Hawkins, who was that. Let’s perform some Taylor-appropriate music.”

Miley Cyrus appeared for a brief moment before the band performed an extended rendition of Photograph after playing Rock Of Ages.

Halfway through the show, Grohl remarked, “It’s like a revolving door of rock icons tonight.” Other performers included Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach, Black Sabbath’s Geezer Butler, and Metallica’s Lars Ulrich.

The collaboration between remaining Nirvana members Grohl and Krist Novoselic and fellow grunge musicians Matt Cameron and Kim Thayil of Soundgarden, who lost their lead singer Chris Cornell five years earlier, was one of the concert’s most poignant moments.

Together, they performed eerie renditions of The Day I Tried to Live and Black Hole Sun, including vocals by Pretty Reckless member Taylor Momsen.

Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Danny Carey of Tool played Working Man and YYZ, respectively, for Rush, who is also mourning the loss of longtime drummer Neil Peart.

On covers of the pop-metal hits Panama and Hot For Teacher, Wolfgang Van Halen performed his father’s fretwork flawlessly.

Less than a month prior, Sir Paul McCartney, Liam Gallagher, and Supergrass joined Foo Fighters for a tribute performance at London’s Wembley Stadium.

SLikethat performance, Hawkins’ kids were prominent, with his teenage son Shane taking the drum stool and tearing through the Foo Fighters’ singles My Hero and I’ll Stick Around.

Everleigh and Annabel Hawkins joined their mother Alison on stage after Queen’s Brian May performed Love Of My Life, a song Alison had explicitly chosen.

The rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah by Grohl’s daughter Violet had earlier served as the show’s emotional and understated opening act.

Everlong by the Foo Fighters served as the show’s finale six hours later. At the Kia Forum in Los Angeles, Grohl told the crowd, “This one’s for Taylor.” We adore you.

From 1997 until his passing in March of this year at the age of 50, Hawkins played drums with the Foo Fighters.

Although there was no given cause of death, a toxicology investigation revealed that he had residues of 10 different drugs, including opiates, marijuana, and antidepressants.

If the medications’ combination played a role, the investigators did not say so.

The charities Music Support and MusiCares will receive the proceeds from the tribute concerts in both London and Los Angeles.
