During Alex Smith’s rookie season, Mahomes served as his backup. After being traded by the Chiefs to the Washington Redskins in 2018, Smith was selected as the starting. Mahomes passed for 5,097 yards, 50 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions in that season. Being the first quarterback to throw for more than 5,000 yards in a single season, he created NFL and collegiate history.

The only other NFL players to complete 5,000 yards and 50 touchdown passes in a single season are he and Peyton Manning. He was also named to the First Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl. Four African-American quarterbacks, including Mahomes, received the Associated Press MVP honor.

After being struck by Jaguars defensive end Arden Key, Kansas City’s star quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered an ankle injury and had to briefly leave the game.

Key collided with Mahomes late in the first period and collapsed on his leg. Mahomes initially seemed to limp toward the end of the quarter after gripping his ankle and knee for a brief period of time. In the following play, he hopped to pass the ball.

Mahomes stumbled to the sideline and hobbled to the bench, bracing his knee. He returned to the game right away, paying close attention to the drive. He was sent back to the sidelines for more testing in the locker room. His return home was denoted as unclear. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reports that Mahomes’ X-ray results weren’t good.

Mahomes may have hurt his upper ankle, according to Rapoport’s hypothesis. More critically, Mahomes was heavily wrapped up when he entered the field to begin the second half.
