Gulnur began mountain climbing at METU’s Mountaineering & Winter Sports Club when he was 17 years old. She has climbed over 30 high-altitude peaks in Turkey, Russia, Georgia, Nepal, Argentina, the United States, and other countries. She first came to Nepal in 2004 to hike and collect data for my Ph.D. research on risk marketing and risk consumption.

As of today, only twelve women have completed the “Eight Summits” trek. Her goal is to be the first Turk and Turkish woman to summit all eight peaks. She scaled Mount McKinley (6,194 meters), Aconcagua (6,959 meters), Kilimanjaro (5,895 meters), Elbrus (5,642 meters), and the Carstensz Pyramid (4,884 m).

She attempted to climb Mount Everest in April 2014 but failed because the expedition was officially halted due to a massive avalanche. Gulnur made a second attempt on May 21, 2018, and became the first Turkish woman to climb Mount Everest from the Nepal side. She also taught at the University of Utah, the American University in Beirut, France’s Universite de Nice-Sophia Antipolis, Austria’s University of Innsbruck, and other institutions.
