Dragic made his debut for Slovenian minor league club KD Ilirija in 2003 when he was 17 years old. Dragic moved to Slovan, a top-tier Slovenian Basketball League & Adriatic League club, after one year. Goran transferred to the Spanish ACB League team Saski Baskonia in 2006, and after two years with Slovan, he was loaned to the Spanish club, Murcia. Goran joined the Slovenian club Union Olimpija in January 2007, and he helped the team win the Slovenian League title in 2007-08. On February 24, 2011, he was given the opportunity to demonstrate his abilities when he was traded to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Aaron Brooks and a protected first-round pick.

In March 2012, he took over for Kyle Lowry, who was sidelined with a bacterial infection. On February 19, 2015, Goran and his brother Zoran Dragic were traded to the Miami Heat as part of a three-team deal that also featured the New Orleans Pelicans and sent John Salmons and Danny Granger to Phoenix. On November 28, 2016, he set season highs with 27 points and 17 assists in a 112-104 loss to the Boston Celtics. Goran and Precious Achiuwa have joined the Toronto Raptors in a sign and trade against Kyle Lowry in August 2021.
