Career
He worked as a doctor in Lofoten and at Rikshospitalet in Christiania (now Oslo). In 1868, Hansen returned to Bergen to study leprosy while working at Lungegrd Hospital with renowned expert Daniel Cornelius Danielsson. Leprosy was thought to be mostly hereditary or miasmic in nature. On the basis of epidemiological studies, Hansen concluded that leprosy was a distinct disease with a distinct cause. In 1870–71, Hansen traveled to Bonn and Vienna to gain the knowledge he needed to prove his hypothesis. In 1873, he announced the discovery of Mycobacterium leprae in all sufferers’ tissues, but he did not identify them as bacteria, and he received little support.
He was a co-founder of the Bergen chapter of the Norwegian Association for Women’s Rights, which was led by his sister, Amalie Hansen, a prominent women’s rights advocate.
