Gal Costa An Iconic Brazilian Singer Passed Away At The Age Of 77

The well-known Brazilian singer Gal Costa passed away on November 9 at the age of 77. Tropicália or Panis et Circencis, her most recent record, was released in 2021, and she took part in the renowned collection.

Former cultural minister and singer-songwriter Gilberto Gil praised her on Twitter, writing:

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, the incoming president of Brazil, also paid tribute to her by posting a photo of her on Instagram and writing in the caption that she was among the best singers in the world and one of the artists who popularized Brazil’s name and musical style.

What led to Gal Costa’s demise?

Gal Costa’s cause of death has not yet been made public. But we do know that she recently postponed her performance at the Primavera Sound concert in Sao Paulo on the recommendation of her doctor. She had surgery to remove a nodule from her right nasal cavity in September of this year.

In December, Gosta was slated to give another performance in Sao Paulo. It is still unknown if she experienced any issues following the procedure, and it is also unknown if she had any additional medical issues that would have contributed to her demise.

Gal Costa, who was born on September 26, 1945, had her acting debut in the Nos television program in August 1964. Before moving to Rio de Janeiro to live with her cousin Nivea, she performed at Nova Bossa Velha and Velha Bossa Nova.

Bethania’s first professionally produced music was her debut album, released in 1965. Costa continued recording music, releasing songs like Eu vim da Bahia, Sim, for voce, and others. Her debut album, Domingo, was released in 1967. One of the album’s songs, Coracao Vagabundo, received rave reviews.

Then, in 1968, Gal became a part of the tropicalia movement by contributing four songs to the joint album Tropicalia: ou Panis et Circenses. The third and fourth International Music Festivals both featured her performances. Gal was Costa’s debut solo album, which she followed up with a second one in 1970.

1970 saw the release of Costa’s next album, Legal, and the subsequent year saw the release of a live album. Some of the most well-known songwriters from Brazil contributed to her songs. One of her best songs during her career was Festa Do Interior. She sang songs in Portuguese, Spanish, and English as singer Carmen Miranda in the 1995 movie The Mandarin.
