Stephenson’s design experience includes several of Europe’s most well-known automakers. He began his career at Ford’s design office in Cologne, Germany, where he created several of the Ford Escort RS Cosworth’s distinguishing features, including the massive double rear spoiler.

He afterward moved to BMW, where he worked for 11 years before being appointed Chief Designer. His design of the new MINI Cooper, which debuted at the Paris Auto Show in 2000, resulted in the brand’s award-winning rebirth and a new generation of MINI cars.

In 2003, the MINI Cooper became the first European vehicle to be named North American Car of the Year. Stephenson also created the first BMW SUV, the BMW X5, while at BMW (E53).

Stephenson was named the first Director of Ferrari-Maserati Concept Design and Development at Maranello and Modena, Italy, in July 2002. His design work in this section included the Maserati GranSport, Maserati MC12, Ferrari FXX, and Ferrari F430.

His contributions to this section included the design of Pininfarina’s work on the Maserati Quattroporte, Maserati GranTurismo, and Ferrari 612 Scaglietti. Stephenson’s success with the Ferrari and Maserati designs led to his employment in 2006 as the head of Fiat, Lancia, and the Commercial Vehicle Styling Centre in Turin, Italy.

He was tasked with reviving the floundering Fiat brand, where he directed the styling of the Punto and Bravo, as well as translating Roberto Giolito’s 2004 Fiat Trepiùno concept into the actual 500, Punto, and Bravo. He was appointed Head of Centro Stile Alfa Romeo Design in 2007.

Stephenson departed the Italian group in April 2008 to become Design Director at McLaren Automotive, where he developed a new design language and directed the development of the new MP4-12C, P1, 675LT, 570S, and 720S models. While at McLaren, he was inspired for the P1 by a sailfish he observed while on vacation in Miami.

Stephenson left McLaren Automotive in 2017 and was said to be rejoining the BMW Group to lead the MINI design team. The rumors were baseless; after leaving McLaren, Stephenson established his design firm, Frank Stephenson Design Consultancy.

From May 2018 to November 2019, Stephenson was the head of Product Design for the German aircraft business Lilium, as well as the Design Master of Suning Smart Technology. Stephenson is still working on a variety of cross-industry design projects, products, and design solutions.
