Everything We Know About Alicia Keys Parents

Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys, One of the most well-known musicians of this generation—and, some would say, one of the greatest ever. The multi-award-winning performer began singing and playing the piano when she was 7 years old, and by the time she was 12, she had begun creating her songs.

She signed with Columbia Records three years later, but following issues with the label, she switched to Arista Records. Keys’ 2001 debut album with J Records brought her five Grammy awards the following year. Alisha hasn’t turned around since then and she’s kept on inspiring us musically.

Where was Alicia Keys born? Ethnicity, Nationality, Family

Alicia Cook was born on January 25, 1981, to Augello Teresa and Craig Cook in Hell’s Kitchen, New York. Augello was left to raise Alicia because Craig and Augello weren’t living together.

Teresa, who was of Italian descent, was a paralegal. She occasionally had to work two or three jobs to support the family. Alicia expressed her shock at her mother’s tireless efforts to Oprah. She uttered:

She put forth nonstop work. I have no idea how she managed to stand up every day. She would arrive home at 3 A.M. if there was a significant trial, then rise at 6 A.M. and continue. But I understood that she would always be there if everything went wrong.

It was a good decision for Alicia to start playing the guitar and writing songs when her mother pushed her to do so. When I had nothing else, I had my mother and the piano, the woman told The Guardian. And what about that? They fulfilled every demand.

After Alicia’s paternal grandmother became ill, she and her father reconciled

Alicia’s father, an African American, was absent during her childhood. He has two other kids and worked as a flight attendant. She and Cook had a strained relationship, which made her value her mother more.

Alicia said to The Guardian that she shied away from discussing her father because she didn’t want to perpetuate the myth that her father was an absentee parent.

After Keys’ paternal grandmother became ill in 2006, her sentiments toward her father began to alter. She was able to view Cook in a different light as a result of the terrifying event. She remarked to The Daily Mail:

“When you see a loved one and know you won’t have them for long, you’ll understand what’s important. She gave it a lot of thought. I could see [my father’s] affection for her. When I saw he wasn’t bad, I asked, “Can we move forward from this point on?” Can we get along? Both you and I are beginning to comprehend one another.

Cook and Keys are now very close

Following their reconciliation, Cook and Keys are now very close. Additionally, Egypt, Genesis, and Alicia’s kids are close to Craig. According to Alicia, holding onto anger is not worth it. She uttered:

Dad and I are doing well right now. I would say that as you mature, you become aware of how much rage you have been repressing. I was angry at the time, and I’m sure I had a right to be angry, but the only person you damage by holding onto your anger is yourself.

Recently, Alicia expressed her appreciation for having repaired her relationship with her father to Dax Shepard.
