Lungi, Nandi’s mother, is from KwaZulu-Natal, a coastal region of South Africa. John and she fell in love when she met him while taking a gap year in London. Nandi and her younger brother Thomas are their two current children, who were born after their marriage.
When they bought Nandi a toy drum set, John and Lungi became aware of her talent. Even though Nandi was only five years old at the time, John was struck by her innate drumming. John was able to recognize the breadth of Nandi’s innate talent because he had played in bands since he was a teenager. To the Sunday Times, he stated:
“I’ve met a lot of extremely outstanding drummers throughout the years. Although I can’t play the drums, I have a decent sense of timing. When Nandi was five years old, we brought the toy drum equipment home, and she immediately started keeping a beat with impeccable timing. What I was hearing was beyond belief. It was instinctive and beat-perfect.
While Lungi works to make sure that her children maintain a connection to their South African heritage, John is determined to see Nandi advance as far as she can with her singing. Although the family is based in Suffolk, England, they frequently visit South Africa. Nandi also combines elements of South African culture into her wardrobe.
