At the start of the 2019 academic year, Knighton began to track and field as a freshman at Hillsborough High Academic in Tampa, Florida. He set the second-fastest time over 200 meters by an under-18 athlete in world history in the final of the 2020 USA Track & Field Junior Olympics in Satellite Beach, Florida, clocking 20.33 seconds.
