Ellen Eugenia Johnson was born in October 1938 in Monrovia, Liberia. Jahmale, her father, was of the Gola tribe, and Juah, her mother, was of Kru-German descent. From 1946 to 1955, she attended the College of West Africa. She eventually relocated to the United States to complete her studies.

In the United States, she studied accounting at Madison Business College. Ellen went on to study Economics at the University of Colorado Boulder. From 1969 to 1971, she also earned a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

In 1965, Ellen worked for the Treasury Department in Liberia. She returned to work as Deputy Minister of Finance in William Tolbert’s government after finishing her education in the United States.

In 1979, she was appointed Minister of Finance, where she implemented policies to address government fiscal mismanagement. She fled to the United States after a coup in Liberia in 1980.

In the United States, she worked for the World Bank. She later became Vice President of Citibank’s Africa Regional Office in Nairobi. She later rose through the ranks to become Equator Bank’s vice president.

Sirleaf was also the Assistant Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme and the Director of its Regional Bureau for Africa. In 1997, she resigned to run for president of Liberia.
