Us Weekly has gathered all the details you need to know about Elizabeth Holmes and Sunny Balwani’s romance as Amanda Seyfried and Naveen Andrews’ portrayal of them receives praise.
His then-girlfriend Elizabeth Holmes started a privately held health technology company called Theranos.
Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, an American businessman and former fraudster, served as their previous president and chief operating officer.
He was the second-largest contributor to Theranos’ collapse, which had duped investors by asserting that the company had created a breakthrough blood test that only needed a little amount of blood, similar to that from a fingerstick.
Elizabeth Holmes and Sunny Balwani wed?
They became pals when Holmes enrolled in Stanford’s Mandarin program in China in 2002, the same year he divorced his then-wife Keiko Fujimoto. Theranos’s founder is 19 years younger than Balwani.
Even though they had a strange chemistry, they didn’t start dating until 2004.
Holmes left college that year to explore a project that claimed to be able to do medical tests with just a small amount of blood drawn from a finger prick.
John Carreyrou claimed in Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup that Balwani was receiving business counsel while he was working on his enterprises, even though she didn’t officially join the company until 2009.
They didn’t tell investors about their relationship. Shortly after their breakup, Holmes and Balwani were charged with nine charges of wire fraud and two counts of conspiring to commit wire fraud.
Then, despite the denial from his counsel, she claimed that he had participated in a “decade-long Campaign of psychological abuse.” After being found guilty on four charges of misleading investors, Holmes will be sentenced in 2022.
Why did Elizabeth Holmes and Sunny Balwani part ways?
In 2016, Theranos began to disintegrate, and Holmes and Balwani’s relationship came to an end. Balwani, the company’s COO for seven years, decided to resign.
Theranos’ testing facilities and Holmes herself were the subjects of FBI, FDA, and CMS inquiries at the time of his resignation.
Holmes and Balwani were barred from owning or operating a laboratory for performing blood tests as a result of their investigations.
The SEC accused Holmes and Balwani of securities fraud in March 2018 for “raising more than $700 million from investors through an elaborate, years-long fraud in which exaggerated or false statements were made about the Company’s technology, business, and financial performance.”
Holmes privately resolved this dispute, but as of 2019, Balwani was still defending himself.
Balwani is currently facing criminal and fraud charges. President Balwani and Holmes were charged with two charges of conspiring to conduct wire fraud and nine counts of wire fraud by a federal grand jury in 2018.
Holmes was found responsible for any charges of fraud in January 2022.
Sunny Balwani began working for Theranos when?
Despite having no prior experience in medicine, Balwani was first appointed as Theranos’ president and chief operating officer in 2009.
However, the workforce soon realized that Balwani’s role at the company was one of an enforcer.
Balwani allegedly acted as a type of watchdog for the company, according to Nick Bilton, a journalist who followed Theranos for Vanity Fair and authored several investigative stories on the company.
Balwani “ensured that scientists and engineers at Theranos did not talk to one another about their work,” according to Bilton, and “He would scold them in emails when staff questioned the accuracy of the Company’s blood-testing equipment.”
