On July 28, 1951, Doug Collins was born in Christopher, Illinois and is of American nationality and belongs to the white ethnic group.

The 68-year-old former basketball player is a graduate of Benton Consolidated High School. He had a successful basketball career under coach Rich Herrin. During his Illinois days, he lived in the neighborhood with John Malkovich the famous movie star.

In 1970, he was coached by Will Robinson, the very first black head coach in NCAA Division I, at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois.

Doug Professional Career

Taking about his Career as a player, Philadelphia 76ers first drafted collins in the 1973 NBA draft, where he played eight seasons for Philadelphia. He was an all-star three times.

Later in 1976-77, He joined Julius Erving and led the Sixers to the NBA Finals, where unfortunately they lost to the Portland Trail Blazers.

In 1979 collins had a rash of injuries to his feet and his left knee which ended his career by 1981. Overall he played 415 NBA games with 7427 points( 17.9 per game).

Coaching Career

After his retirement, Collins started working as a coach. He stared at the University of Pennsylvania, where he joined Bob Weinhauer ‘s staff as an assistant coach. Later followed Weinhauer Arizona State for the same job.

In May 1986, Collins became Chicago Bulls head coach; where a young Michael Jordan was in his third season of playing career. By 1995, He became the head coach of the Detroit Pistons. His arrival in Detroit was similar to his arrival in Chicago, as the pistons had a second-year star Grant Hill who was often compared with Michael Jordan.

By 2010, Collins was hired as Philadelphia 76er head coach where he coached different players like Thaddeus Young, Louis Williams. Aside from his coaching career, collins also has Broadcasting Career. He began working for CBS in the mid-1980s, mainly calling playoff games.

In 1985-86 he was the leading color analyst for local broadcasts of the 76er games. He has done some broadcasting work for different networks like CBS, NBC, TNT, and TBS along with his coaching stints.

He also worked as an analyst for NBC Sports’ TV coverage of basketball at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and 2012 London Summer Olympics. By September of 2017, Collins joined the team Chicago Bulls, as a senior basketball adviser.
