A lawsuit has been brought against Nanjing University’s Adult Education College by the family of Diao Aiqing, a 19-year-old student who was brutally killed and mutilated in 1996.
After a disagreement with the building’s administration, Diao was last seen leaving her dorm. Nine days later, many areas on and around the university campus were where her remains were found.
Although the horrible nature of the murder shocked and outraged many people in China, neither the offender nor their whereabouts were ever discovered.

After eight places near the University, including a stadium, entry gate, hospital, and roadway, human remains were ultimately found, and police were able to positively identify them as belonging to Diao.
On Reddit, a picture of Diao Aiqing’s autopsy report was shared.
The image, which revealed the victim’s mutilated corpse, sparked worldwide indignation and debate. The image generated a contentious discussion over whether the government should have made the image public.
Some said that the image had to be made public in order to draw attention to the unresolved case and to the horrifying nature of the murder. Others said the image was offensive to the victim’s relatives and overly explicit.

In 2021, Diao’s family filed a lawsuit against Nanjing University, demanding 1.6 million yuan ($246,000) in damages. The goal of the action was to bring about justice for Diao’s death, not to get monetary compensation.
