Dan was chosen in the fifth round of the 2005 NFL Draft, 145th overall. He made his first career NFL start on October 12, 2008, in a 12-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. He also played in the final game of the 2008 season, but his team lost. The Houston Texans signed him on March 1, 2009.

Furthermore, he was beaten out for the backup quarterback position by Rex Grossman during the preseason, and he ended up as the Texans’ number three quarterback. Grossman was traded to the Washington Redskins the following season, and Dan was promoted to backup quarterback.
