Parents’ marriage was short-lived

Larry Bird, a well-known basketball player, married Springs Valley classmate Janet Condra in 1975. They were both teenagers at the time. They divorced after only a year of marriage. Larry’s father committed suicide a few months later.

Larry attempted to reunite with Janet. Janet became pregnant and gave birth to Corrie even though they never remarried. Bird, on the other hand, was never accepted into the family. Larry used basketball as an escape from his painful personal problems.

In terms of Corrie’s parents, Larry Mattingly has been married to Dinah Mattingly since 1989. Conner and Mariah, their adoptive children, are their only children. Janet, likewise, is now the widow of her late husband, Mike Deakins.

Relationship with Father is estranged

Larry’s connection with his sole biological daughter, Corrie, is strained. Larry concentrated on his professional career and divorced his then-wife and their newborn daughter. Corrie, on the other hand, has always wanted him to be a part of her life.

While Larry avoided Corrie, she was doing everything she could to get close to him. She addressed a letter to her father, requesting that he invite her to his major retirement celebration. Larry, however, never responded.

Larry referenced Corrie in his memoirs, saying:

“Because I disagree with Janet, I can’t honestly say I’ve had that much involvement in her life. I keep thinking about Corrie, but what can I really do now? To be honest, I’ve never really known how to handle the issue, but I love her and will be there for her whenever she needs it.”

Corrie came on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 1998 and stated that she was neither upset nor bitter at her father for abandoning her for the majority of her life.
