Christie Smythe and Martin Shkreli’s Relationship, Divorce, and How Did They Meet

Christie opened up in an Elle article by Stephanie Clifford about how she upended her perfect New Yorker life for Martin, quitting her Bloomberg job and divorcing her husband.

When Martin was under federal investigation for several securities law violations in 2015, the Missouri native first met the infamous businessman. Christie described her growing involvement in Martin’s case, saying,

“…incremental decisions, like slowly boiling yourself to death in the bathtub.”

She not only covered Martin’s case, but she also broke the news of his arrest. As she reflected on her relationship with Martin, Christie told Elle, “I fell down the rabbit hole.”

Christie divorced her husband and left Bloomberg in 2018 because of her relationship with Martin. Soon after, Christie began paying him more visits in prison than she normally would. Christie confessed her feelings for Martin in a prison visitation room that smelled like chicken wings just months after leaving Bloomberg. Christie stated,

“He told me he loved me as well. It’s difficult to recall a time when I was happier.”

She also told the magazine that they talked about their children’s names in prison. Christie revealed that she had even frozen her eggs because she was afraid that by the time Martin was released from prison, she would be too old to have children.

The aspiring journalist also revealed that she hasn’t seen her love since February 2020 due to all COVID-19 protocols. Christie wrote a letter describing their commitment and proposing Martin live with her in her apartment in April 2020, when Martin requested early release due to coronavirus spread inside the prison, which Martin approved.

When Martin discovered that Christie was assisting Elle with the article, he stopped communicating with her and ended the relationship through his lawyer. Christie was saddened by Martin’s reaction, but it appeared that Christie had moved on from Martin. Christie told The Washington Post that she was open to dating other men.

Christie Smythe’s Husband, Divorce, and Children

Christie first met her husband, Devin Arcoleo, in 2009. Following that, the couple began dating. After that, in 2014, the couple married.

The couple was content until Martin entered their lives, putting an end to their “perfect little Brooklyn life.” Christie also revealed that her husband had previously warned her that Martin was manipulating her for his own benefit.

Christie filed for divorce from her husband, Devin, in 2018. However, the couple did not have any children. Devin was upset when the Elle story broke, according to Christie. Devin joined PIMCO in August 2006 after graduating from NYU Stern School of Business. By 2020, he had risen to the position of vice president at the company.
