Burgess married twice, the first time to Helen Derby Berrien (July 25, 1932-August 20, 1935) and the second time to Margaret Perry (July 25, 1932-August 20, 1935). (From January 10, 1936, to July 19, 1938). The millionaire then married Paulette Goddard on May 21, 1944, and the couple divorced on June 8, 1949.

After three failed marriages, Meredith married Kaja Sundsten for the third time on January 8, 1951. His two children from his fourth marriage were Jonathon and Tala. He was forced to divorce his previous wife after her death in 1997.

Meredith served in the United States Army Air Forces during WWII. He eventually advanced to the rank of captain and was discharged in 1945. The late actor then began working in the theater. He was a member of the Civic Repertory Theatre in New York. He not only performed in plays such as Winterset and Romeo and Juliet, but he also directed a number of them.

Later, he made his big-screen debut as an uncredited extra in the 1935 film The Scoundrel. He established himself as a leading man in Hollywood after starring in Of Mice and Men alongside Betty Field, Lon Chaney Jr., Charles Bickford, and Noah Beery Jr.

Burgess’s credits include The Story of G.I. Joe, A Walk in the Sun, The Twilight Zone, Batman, the Rock film series, The Day of the Locust, Foul Play, Clash of the Titans, and many more. He played Grandpa Gustafson in the 1995 romantic comedy film Grumpier Old Men, alongside Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau, Ann-Margret, Sophia Loren, Kevin Pollak, and Daryl Hannah.

Burgess died at the age of 89. He died in his Malibu home on September 9, 1997, and his body was cremated. His death was caused by Alzheimer’s disease and melanoma complications.
